THE THIRD TRIAL

[It happens again, like clockwork. Once the final clues have happened, the elevator in the food court opens with a DING. It doesn't leave until everyone has gotten on, and the thought occurs to everyone that they shouldn't waste time.

An innocent man was ruthlessly murdered, after all. After everything that's happened.

Just as before, everyone who is still alive will find their favorite food and drink at their platform. And just as before, Akechi, Helena and Ren's platforms have now been lowered and covered with a white cloth, joining the increasing number of dead spaces in the trial area. Helena's platform, however, has an addition not present on any other deceased's platform: a single white lily, placed almost reverently on top.

Well. Whatever reason that lily is there, it shouldn't detract from the fact that there is a trial to be had here, once more. Its time to look at the evidence at hand, and to hopefully find whoever did this heinous crime.

So, it's time, Titled.

Precisely. As for the rules, it doesn't say she isn't allowed to assist us in conducting murders so someone could have asked and she'd likely have complied.

Yes, but we've seen with Miss Nyaf, her friend, that if someone breaks the rules, there are dire repercussions. I don't know how many of you were there when Helena tried to kill the Life Coach, but she had to die because of attacking her.

They had no choice.

Why would she suddenly not adhere to those stringent rules now?

There's also a rule against stealing, so unless Ren himself stole those things...

Though it is odd how the rule against stealing is the only one that doesn't mention a punishment.

Probably because it depends on the reason.

Yup. My bosses can be pretty chill on that one if it's for rule 7. Though there are probably still things they'd be, like, mad about if you took during then.

Not just that. I doubt sleeping outside of your room is punished in the same way as attacking the Life Coach, but that does mention a punishment. It only says that no one likes a thief. I thought that curious when every other rule specifically mentions punishment.

...All of us would have assumed a punishment, wouldn't we? But someone who knows the rules better than us...

My other thought was that the person who stole the items felt they had nothing to lose, even if they were caught.

[ And now he's circling back to the idea that Ren could have done this... ]

Or they could have asked the Life Coach for clarification about that rule.

[Kurama scrolls through something on his phone before looking up. He can't quite meet Ursula's eyes.]

...technically, there is nothing within the listed rules that says she cannot hurt us or help to hurt us. Only that we cannot hurt her.

But she wouldn't do that. She's here to help us. She went in with... you and...

[ She swallows. She can't say Akechi's name without getting upset. She looks at his podium. ]

Consider what the motive this week was. Maybe she thought sacrificing one person was helping us.

[ ... She's quiet for a long moment. She stares at Ren's podium, so close to her own. Swallows, and then says: ]

... She would, probably. Especially if... someone volunteered to die to save all of us. Wasn't... Mister Sanzashi acting a bit odd to all of you?

...Yeah. He was.

[ ...She'll bring up something on her phone. ]

[ She looks... upset. ]

He had a family... what could cause him to contemplate letting her kill him?
