THE THIRD TRIAL

[It happens again, like clockwork. Once the final clues have happened, the elevator in the food court opens with a DING. It doesn't leave until everyone has gotten on, and the thought occurs to everyone that they shouldn't waste time.

An innocent man was ruthlessly murdered, after all. After everything that's happened.

Just as before, everyone who is still alive will find their favorite food and drink at their platform. And just as before, Akechi, Helena and Ren's platforms have now been lowered and covered with a white cloth, joining the increasing number of dead spaces in the trial area. Helena's platform, however, has an addition not present on any other deceased's platform: a single white lily, placed almost reverently on top.

Well. Whatever reason that lily is there, it shouldn't detract from the fact that there is a trial to be had here, once more. Its time to look at the evidence at hand, and to hopefully find whoever did this heinous crime.

So, it's time, Titled.

[ It's a little while after Loewe says this, a bit of discomfort surfaces on his face. ]

Actually, maybe it wouldn't have been as difficult as we're thinking, since there's something they might have been able to use to their advantage...

[ He's pausing just long enough for his jawline to tighten. ]

...Then they'd just have to be where he's not looking.

... To give him poisoned cigarettes, though? Wasn't he clearly killed by that? There's no wound diagram.

Yeah. If he had his cigarettes out on the counter, then they'd just have to switch out a poisoned pack for a non-poisoned one. It would me a lot less messy, don't you think?

There was nothing else poisoned on the scene. A bottle was found with a bitter smell, but it was empty and could have just been a means to carry the poison. There was definitely one poisoned cigarette that had been smoked.

It means that they wouldn't have to worry about how loud they were being in switching things out.

... Hmm... well, in that case... can I ask a question?

Why go through all this trouble and not just stab him instead, or something? He was clearly not in the best shape. I mean, there was his power, but if he was deaf, and facing backwards to our killer, would he have seen it coming?

...Less mess. Much easier to obscure yourself poisoning someone than if you stabbed them. Blood would get everywhere, for one.

It just... seems so convoluted, I guess. Why his cigarettes? Why not his drink?

Because he'd be sure to smoke his cigarettes, but he might not finish his drink, is my guess.

When something is ingested, the stomach has to take time to digest it.

[ A bit tensely: ]

When inhaled, that process is bypassed, meaning he would die much more quickly.

The culprit wouldn't need to be there at the time he ingests the poison, which eliminates the potential of a repeat of last week and a need to kill a witness.

There was also his medical condition, right?

It would have been pretty easy to attack him fatally from surprise, I guess, but cyanide is basically a certain thing. The culprit either didn't want him to suffer or didn't want to risk him using his power to survive and call for help.

Or both...

I actually only noticed after talking to him during the truth serum game...

He could only talk to a person if he could see their lips, and he was always facing someone directly when doing it.
