WEEK 2

WEEK 2

[The new week comes.

Those who have eaten the offered food from the Stewards will find themselves much more refreshed and energetic. They will also find their need for food is practically nonexistent for the rest of the week. However, that may not be the only side effect of their sustenance they might find-nor will all of the side effects be pleasant.

There are no new floors to explore, though there is a bouncy castle in the arena now. (Thanks, Harriet.) There is also the possibility that there may be more to find on these floors-or maybe they are just going on a wild goose chase. Or maybe there is something to find, though those who look for answers may not like what they find.

And what of the number of Strangers left? The Stewards have already allowed a murderer to get away with their crime scot free, and no one else has uncovered the culprit. Who knows what else the Stewards might have up their sleeves?

There are fourteen strangers left.]

I am - was - ill. And apparently desperate.

It's a transformation that few in my world are mad enough to seek out. The methods all hidden away in ancient tomes, far from the prying eyes of those with mere casual curiosity.

And fewer still survive the ritual; those who fail usually have their souls simply... extinguished.

It's a remarkably simple deal. Without any sort of alchemical preservation the body wastes away as any corpse would, but otherwise... you keep the phylactery safe, and you never have to worry about hunger or thirst or sleep ever again.

And now it's all in jeopardy.

Is it a book, or a scroll in a case, or - the word has a different meaning where I call home, it is always a text that is considered a relic, but I just want to know what I should be looking for, if they've hidden it somewhere we can get to.

[This has become an utterly horrific hostage situation, even more than it already was. He bites his lower lip, worrying at it in thought. When he speaks again, it's slow, as though he's speaking through a dream.]

But that kind of desperation... I think that's why he told me to leave, I must have mentioned something like that process. It's the same where I'm from, there are few stories about storing a soul somewhere else, the texts describing how are all but lost... it's heresy. It's forbidden, because the possible cost is as you said but sometimes worse.

There was a man who loved a woman who was going to become a vampire when she finally died, once, long ago. They tied her soul to his weapon so that he could avenge what had been done to her. I've handled the weapon. It... she is there, and she is angry, and she is starving.

It's not necessarily a text, either, though many of the liches of old chose such a vessel.

I don't remember just what it is.
