[It's been one week on the Gigantic
and it's clear that Zero
is a big dickzzzzzsht



A week has passed. However, there is no denying anymore that the power Zero possesses is very real. One person is already dead because of this, regardless of what, exactly, the Gimme's role in it was.

There is also no denying that the ship is somehow powered by blood, if not made of blood entirely. Why? How? And what do the clues uncovered in the previous week have to do with it?

The watches, meanwhile have not changed in any way. Everyone is still in their color groups. The doors to the next floor are still locked as well. Perhaps those are also murder dependent. Which is...also not good. But at least there's food and laundry down here, so...maybe it'll get boring eventually, but for now, infinite confinement on the bottom decks of the ship may not be so bad. right?

Oh, you know, just Zero trying his hardest to embarrass me, since being a self-admitted villain and a devil is plenty enough for normal people to have it out for me anyway.

Figured I'd set up a movie night to try to put the whole thing out of mind for everyone.

While I understand the issues of being both a Villain and a Devil, I'd think such secrets would make you more endearing, not less.

Who says I'm trying to be endearing? He probably knew there was nothing he could say that's more condemning than what everyone already knows, so he had mine spout nonsense that would mess up my image.

[Ah, so Alastor is this type of person. The Kind who worries about his image and anything that doesn't match it.

...Mood to a point, honestly.]

So you'd rather be feared and hated than adored? For your image, I mean.

...I'd rather be feared than ridiculed, or seen as weak. 'T's the sort of thing that gets a demon killed, and humans tend to only adore devils when they don't know what they're dealing with.

I see, I see.

[He nods.]

It does seem a bit lonely, but if reputation is so paramount among demons, then I understand entirely. It does strike me a bit as the sort of thing I saw among members of gangs, back in Shinjuku.

More like...strength is paramount. Reputation just keeps you from having to prove your strength every five minutes. Most demons, if they think for a second that you're weaker than them, they'll eat you alive. Maybe literally.

...I suppose this means the sermons in regards to hell was true, then.

[SINCE, WELL....that sounds pretty close to quite a few descriptions of hell, honestly.]

Though I do find myself wondering - were you always a demon, or were you once a man? ...Or something else?

I was born a demon, though there are plenty of devils that started out as humans or angels. Though, not all of them are quite what mortal scripture would have you believe.

Anyone with a stronger lean toward darkness than light can end up in Hell, even if they're not the debased sinners a lot of stories depict them as. Lots of Witches, for instance, sold their souls for the power to help preserve the balance of the human world.

[That...somehow resonates with him, oddly enough. As well as hearing about Witches in such a manner.]

But I assume those Witches were also hunted down for the crime of having sold their souls, regardless of the intent?

Not always. Witches used to loosely cooperate with the angels' Sages to keep the human world safe, though there was always a certain level of tension.

But yeah, at some point around five hundred years ago, the Sages suddenly seemed to decide their dark counterparts were dangerous, and crusaded to see them exterminated. I couldn't tell you why, though. As far as I've been able to find out, the Sage clan was destroyed in the attempt, but the Witch hunts had enough momentum to see that clan eliminated too.

Most likely a power grab that failed on them, or a potential coup within the leadership of the Sages from one who hated Witches and the fragile peace between them.

Enough contempt and greed to risk the stability of the trinity...wish I could say I've never seen anything so stupid, but that's about what happened with Mundus trying to destroy humanity.

Mundus? It sounds as if there's quite the story there.

The last devil to claim rulership over the entire underworld. He took the 'might makes right' attitude of most demons and extended it to 'the weak deserve death' as a justification for waging a war of extinction on humankind.

Aaah, that sort of being. I see.

[Yep, sounds about right.]

Despite that humanity has nowhere near the abilities of Devil-kind and thus can't be properly compared to the same things your people can.

Personally, I think it was just an excuse to get the underworld riled up. The method he used to secure his position requires the blood of humans, so wiping the species out would mean no other devil could challenge him.

As far as he thought, anyway. No one's quite sure where Sparda's power came from, as far as I know.
