THE THIRD TRIAL
(~SK. 17-18)

[When the investigation ends, the D O N G rings throughout the ship, followed by Zero's voice.]

It is time. Everyone, come to the theater. Time is...wasting.

[And so it is. The seating has once more changed to reflect the fallen-Moriarty and now Brain's podiums are draped in black. And, of course, there is no food-

The screens come up, and the mask of Zero appears, ever inscrutable. Their instructions are brief.]

Your Brain is gone, I'm afraid. Cut into pieces and cast aside...and someone here knows why. Now, it's time for you to discover the truth as well...if you can.

[The trial for the murder of Brain, the Blue, has begun.]

It's possible. It would mean that he... died after four wrong guesses, though.

Was there a list of four letters anywhere?

And... And I'm not sure how he could have played, if he was the one being hanged. He wouldn't have been able to talk....

That, and what word would he have even been guessing?

Something with seven letters, if that is what was happening. I don't know if there's any other information that we have right now though.

That's true...and there are a lot of seven letter words we could use, I'm guessing.

Seven letters, correct? Sadly the culprit didn't note any right guesses he might have made.

Wrong letters are usually marked down as well as correct guesses, so that the person or people who are playing are more easily able to avoid repeats.

Um.

Is... is it possible that someone was trying to 【set up a game】 for someone else to play, rather than playing it themselves?

Though... if that were the case I'd have expected him to also be decapitated.....

A mystery for us to play? Things with letters...

[He brings out the two notes and the book again- the one with his name- does it have any other letters on it? Does the book have any missing letters he hasn't seen?

He also hands the cipher note over]

The slash. What letters do you suspect it could be? It seems tilted so I don't suspect it is a letter like H or L- More like a V or maybe a W.

[She frowns at it, then quickly flips to a clean page and writes down the entire alphabet in the cypher, in order, and compares the mark.]

It seems like the letters that contain some part of this stroke are A, M, N, R, V, W, and X. Of those, I'd consider V, W, or X to be most likely. Any of the others would need to be written in some way other than the standard left to right.

....What if the word we're supposed to be guessing is the killer's name?

[He hates suggesting this, since it implicates him, but...]

....So...someone with seven letters?

That would narrow it to Valerie or Alastor, I believe.

If he was propped up perhaps? Though I did not notice any misplaced furniture.

[ Val's not saying anything but her eyes are kinda widened right now, accentuated by the fact that there's now-drying bloodtears that just streamed out.

She's not breathing or anything, she doesn't need to, but there's an odd, even-more-predatory gleam in those eyes. ]

... Val? A...are you okay? I know this is awful....

[She takes a step towards her, instinctively wanting to offer comfort but not entirely sure how to do so. Val has never seemed like much of a hugger....]

The autopsy report said that he died of hyperextension of his neck, not blood loss, though. Even if his body doesn't bleed now that he's dead, under normal circumstances, would that really have happened if his limbs were amputated while he was still alive?

Neither did I.

Perhaps the location of the limbs represented the letter.

It would explain the distant location of the workshop. But... the weapons room was also used. Hm...
